Ink Chemist/Quality Control – Job Summary


Experienced Applied Chemist to provide leadership and expertise in Ink Development, Quality Control, product regulatory conformance.


  • Minimum Bachelors Degree in Chemistry
  • Experience with formulating inks or paints
  • Experience with developing Quality Control procedures and standards
  • Experience working with cross functional teams to achieve team and company goals

Duties and Responsibilities:

Plan, conduct and direct the research to develop innovative profitable new paints and inks products for the art market. Develop and test new ideas directed at improving ink properties to add value through improved performance, ability to meet regulatory requirements, reduced cost or improved efficiency in manufacturing or application.  Responsible for development and testing of Speedball inks, Akua inks and Mona Lisa branded fluids.  Develop necessary quality standards based on customer requirements.  Develop necessary test methods and processes to insure inks are properly manufactured.  Test Production Quality as necessary.  Lead competitive testing of inks and supplies.  Respond to Customer inquiries as necessary.  Work with chemical distributors and manufacturers to maintain up to date information on new chemical technologies related to Speedball products, insure raw materials are properly specified and insure competitive pricing.  Notify suppliers when products are not within specification and work to resolution.  Provide leadership in continuous improvement, through improving quality, materials, processes and reducing costs.  Provide written General Conformity Certificates for our products to our customers as necessary.  Coordinate outside testing of our products to conform to ACMI and CPSIA requirements. Maintain up to date status of products in Duke’s Toxicological evaluation program.

Responsible for inspecting incoming materials, in process components, and finished fabricated products to ensure adherence to company quality standards and customer specifications.  Develop necessary quality standards and customer requirements. Draw required sketches and write inspection procedure for items to be fabricated, indicating areas to be examined, measuring devices to be used, and maximum and minimum acceptable standards. Distributes sketch and procedure to manufacturing, production control.  Confers with customer service representatives to resolve complaints. Notifies suppliers and subcontractors of reasons for rejection of materials and parts received.  Provide technical service to consumers and retailers who have questions about product quality or technical aspects of the products, including new applications for the products.  Provide leadership in continuous improvement, through improving quality, materials, processes and reducing costs.

  • MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint Proficient
  • Attention to detail
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and via email
  • Excellent mathematical skills
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and tasks with flexibility of daily priorities
  • Ability to learn the arts of using Speedball Products and to be able to explain technical processes.
  • Experience working with cross functional teams
  • Willingness to work in all aspects of the business as necessary
