Collagraph: A combination of the words “collage” and “graphic” to describe a print made from a matrix built with collage materials and methods. Collagraphs can be richly textured with a deep emboss and high contrast; they can also be subtle or delicate and hold a wide tonal range.

This weekend workshop is an exploration of collagraph methods using found objects, acrylic media, carborundum, and plastic plates. Learn about the properties of a variety of acrylic polymer media and methods for using textiles, textured paper, and other found objects. Recycled plastic plates (PETG, Makrolon, Lexan, etc), previously used for monotype, drypoint, or other collagraph methods are used to develop prints that may reveal or conceal the histories of their source materials. Practice proofing multiple states of a plate and try a variety of possible inking methods. We will print on an etching press using Akua intaglio inks and rag papers. All levels welcome, experimental outlook encouraged.

This workshop is presented as part of Zea Mays’ “Green to the Extreme” series in which we are focusing on ways to make art that recycles and up-cycles materials.
